Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday is a day for indulging. Traditionally eaten in the Christian faith the day before Lent , Pancake Day is a day now celebrated each year, whether for religious reasons or simply as a reason to enjoy some delicious pancakes and all the naughty treats that go along with them. We’ve hunted down the best pancake recipes and ideas, both sweet and savoury, so that you can enjoy two courses, because sometimes you’ve gotta treat yo’ self, and obviously perfect that perfect flip technique.

Let’s start with the basics – The perfect pancake. Everyone knows that the first one will always be a practice round while the pan warms up, although just because it doesn’t look perfect, doesn’t mean you still can’t ‘test’ it for flavour! Starting with the perfect pancake mix recipe will give you a head start in creating the perfect stack. Queen of baking, Mary Berry, offers up her fool proof recipe here. This type of pancake is everyone’s go-to and is ideal for traditional flavours like lemon and honey, or of course, Nutella! For an alternative gluten and dairy free option, we love these super simple banana pancakes. We love topping these with a generous dollop of Greek yogurt, loads of delicious, juicy berries and a drizzle of honey.

If, like us, you really like to go all out on Pancake Day, start with a savoury option. Ingredients like spinach, mushrooms and of course, cheese are ideal for filling out savoury pancakes. These delicious cheese and ham pancakes are the perfect first course, and if you want to try something a little less traditional, why not try this baked recipe.

Now for Round 2 – Our personal favourite! For those with a sweet tooth, there are endless recipes for sickly sweet pancakes of all varieties, but here are just a few of the best we have found. These red velvet crepes are a perfect hybrid for cake lovers, as well as this carrot cake inspired pancake recipe, but sometimes you just can’t beat a good glug of Golden Syrup on a fresh from the pan warn and fluffy pancake!

We hope your pancake day is filled with all of these treats and more (and hopefully not too many stuck to the ceiling!).

Happy Flipping!
