Q&A with Alexandra Vanthournout www.alexloves.com
Meet our newsletter guest editor Alex Vanthournout http://alexloves.com/
Alex is a freelance fashion journalist from Belgium now based in London. Alex founded http://alexloves.com/ in 2009, ‘living the dream’ really started for Alex when she became the first ever blogger to be invited to write for Chanel News and attended the SS11 show in Paris.
We have an exclusive Q&A session with Alex to find out what’s going to be rocking her world in 2012!
What do you love most about Ash?
Trendy yet comfortable footwear with a touch of rock ‘n roll!
What trends are you backing or most excited about for SS12?
To be honest, I don’t really follow trends, but just go with what I like. I did see a lot of florals on the catwalks though, which I’m quite excited about! Erdem is my favourite designer, so I’m looking forward to wearing my many pieces this summer. As I usually wear dark colours, people are always surprised to see me in bright clothes.
Which pair of Ash trainers do you most see yourself wearing?
The Bowie grey canvas. They look so comfortable and being a shorty, I can always use a bit of extra height!
Tell us how founding your blog came about?
I had just left a very busy job at a big fashion brand and found myself looking for a job (in the middle of recession!) for a bit longer than I had anticipated, so I started a blog to keep myself busy. 2 years later, this is the job!
What’s a typical day in the life of a freelance journalist and blogger?
My office (read: a desk underneath the staircase) is just next to my bedroom, so I’m usually up early, coffee in hand, responding to emails and starting work on a new post. Some weeks I can be stuck at home for days, other times I will have tons of appointments, events, launches, lunches, etc so I’m constantly on the go! This is the great thing about doing what I do – I never know how my day is going to turn out…
Everyone loves to discover a new secret boutique or shopping haven. Do you have any hidden gems you can share with us?
Ok, I have a confession to make… even though I’m a bit of a shopaholic, I HATE shopping – too busy, too many people, too stressful. That’s why I love shopping online – everything comes straight to my door and I can try things on in the comfort of my home. If I do hit the shops, I like to go to Marylebone High Street, which has a bit of a villagey feel to it. The shops are more like boutiques: my favourites are Matches, Sandro, Kabiri, Skandium, By Malene Birger and of course Ash as well!
When you’re not hard at work, where are we likely to find you at play?
Angel. I love living in the area, there’s so much to do! There’s an endless choice of bars and restaurants, I love the market and the luxurious Screen on The Green cinema, where you can watch your movie with a cocktail and a nibble.
If you could style anyone in the Ash Sports collection who would you pick, what pair of shoes would you dress them in and why?
Zooey Deschanel, just because she’s gorgeous and I love her quirky style. I’m not sure she’s much of a trainer type of girl, but I’d love to see her dressed down for once, in a simple navy sweater, grey skinny jeans and the Ash Virgin Clay trainers – the girl next door!
LFW is soon going to be upon us, what designers are you most looking forward to seeing?
It’ll be my 10th LFW, and I always look forward to seeing the incredible raw talent we have here, but this year I’m hoping to maybe go to NYFW for the first time.
What’s top of your 2012 to do list?
Expand Alex Loves into something bigger and more exciting. Perhaps with an online shop, perhaps with more contributors – I don’t know. But I definitely want to use this wonderful opportunity I’ve been given to the max!
Any resolutions you’d like to divulge with us?
Work harder, do better and continue to focus on staying happy and healthy, nothing else matters if you don’t have that.
